Ma Hula Piko Festival – Molokai, Hawaii

It is cold in the northern states of the US and beautiful on Molokai so come out and enjoy the Ka Moloka’I Makahiki  Festival that is held each January.  The name means Ancient Hawaiian Games and takes place at Kaunakakai Town Baseball Park.  You will also be able to check out the crafts, food booths and other entertainment while you are there.

This is ranked as one of the largest events on Molokai and a perfect break from the hum drum of getting back into the swing of work after the holidays.  Come and enjoy the history and the events at the Ma Hula Piko Festival.

If you don’t plan your trip for January then come in May when there are other festivals on the island for you to participate in and enjoy.  The Ka Moloka’I Makahiki  is held in early May to celebrate the birth of the ancient hula dance.  Everyone knows that the hula is special to the Hawaiian Islands but do you know how it got started and the meaning of all the gestures?  You can learn all about them at the festival.  Look forward to the third weekend in May when locals and visitors gather to watch and participate in dancing, music, food and crafts of the island.  It will also give you the opportunity to learn about the dance and its history.

Stay for the month and you will be able to enjoy the Kanaka Ikaika Kayak Race, the world championship of kayak and one-person canoe racing.  People from all over the world come to participate in this race and enjoy the beautiful weather on Molokai.  This race is solo and tests the skills of the racers on a 32 mile journey across the Kaiwi Channel, from Molokai to the east shore of Oahu.

In September you can enjoy the Aloha Festivals.  This is the premier cultural showcase focused on preserving the unique islands traditions.  You will be able to celebrate Hawaii’s music, dance and history during the festival.

Regardless of the time of year that you want to visit Molokai there is something for you to do.  Not only can you enjoy the wonderful water, the beauty of the island and the gracious people but you can participate in the festivals and celebrations.  Although Molokai isn’t the best known of the islands you will certainly enjoy your time there.
