If you have ever flown a kite you know the joy of catching the wind just right and watching the colorful kite soar into the heights of the beautiful blue sky.  Watching the tail swing with the wind, seeing the kite flip the direction you want with a movement of your wrist.  Ahh, the joy of flying a kite.

Now you can see a huge array of the colorful kites being made at the Big Wind Kite Factory in Maunaloa town in west Molokai.  They stock a variety of colorful kites including dancing hula girl kites and pineapple windsocks to the high-performance stunt kites.

You can take a tour of the factory and learn about expert kite-making techniques with the owners even giving free daily kite flying lessons.

The kites are made from nylon.  They use fiberglass spars for the kites and the hoops of the windsocks are made with poly tubing.  During the tour they will tell you the best kite flying places on the island.

The island is windy which makes it perfect for learning to fly a kite.  Jonathan and Daphne Socher are the kite designers and owners of the factory.

There is a gallery adjacent to the factory and part of the kite shop which carries locally made crafts, Hawaiian books and CDs, Asian import jewelry and fabrics, and an elegant line of women’s linen clothing.

Open year round from 8:30 am to 5 pm (hours may be shorter on weekends).  The tours are guided and best of all they are FREE.
