Canoeing Around Kauai

The state of Hawaii is a place famed for the peacefulness and beauty of the land and waters. Each of the islands has a different personality, and vacationers who are making a trip would do well to consider the type of vacation they want before booking a hotel on one of the islands.

Kauai, for example, is the perfect island getaway for those who want to experience nature. Some of the most popular activities on the island are canoeing and kayaking. It is one of the best ways to see the wonders of the island.

The Wailua River

Perhaps the most famous place to canoe and kayak on Kauai is the Wailua River. It is a very long, slow moving river that begins at the Wai'ale'ale Crater. Many tributaries feed this river as it winds toward the ocean.

You can find several different places along the river where you can turn off the main body of water and explore. Many of these small forks in the river lead to beautiful waterfalls. A place called Secret Falls can be found about 35 minutes from the mouth of the river by taking the right fork. The waterfall is very picturesque.

The Na Pali Coast

Another place in Kauai loved by those in canoe and kayak is the Na Pali Coast. It is located on the northwest side of Kauai. The coast is inaccessible by automobile, and the only land trail is an eleven-mile hike. The best way to get there is via the water.

Those traveling by canoe will see the beautiful and rugged coastline, as well as some sea birds and marine wildlife. It is a gorgeous trip, but the paddling can get quite exhausting. Be sure to stop and rest at the isolated Kalilau Beach when you go.

You can find a number of different places on the island that you can rent canoes and kayaks as well as get the scoop on some other great places to visit. You can also choose to have a guide take you on a tour if you wish, or you can paddle out with just you and the family.

When canoeing, be sure that you bring a few essentials along with you. You should have plenty of fresh water, sunscreen, and a hat to make sure the sun doesn't burn you. You might also want to bring a map just so you always know where you are. A camera and a sense of adventure are also key ingredients to making sure you have a great trip! Have fun and be safe.
