The exhibits include photographs, and audio effects to give visitors a better sense of the different wars.
You can learn about the ancient Hawaiians as well as how they prepared for war. Powerful warriors and sailors, they were like many ancient societies that consulted their gods before going to war, praying for victory and protection. The weapons they used were made of wood and stone, accentuated with shark's teeth and bones to provide deadlier edges. They also used slings to bring down their foes.
Visitors will also be able to learn a lot about the build up of the military in Hawaii over the years as well as why it made a perfect strategic location for the United States.
You can also learn about one of the most devastating attacks ever to occur – the attack on Pearl Harbor. The attack destroyed many American airplanes as well as naval ships, and human casualties suffered on December 7, 1941. You will be able to see a number of photographs and read accounts of the fateful day.
The Gallery of Heroes honors those who received awards of valor in the military – the Congressional Medal of Honor, and the Distinguished Service Cross (also the Navy Cross and the Air Force Cross). Visitors will be able to see their pictures on display, as well as citations stating what they did to receive the medal.
Before leaving the museum, you will want to head to the gift shop to pick up a souvenir. You can find apparel, key chains, books, postcards, and a whole lot more. You will certainly be able to find something for yourself and everyone back home.
