Pacific Tsunami Museum - Hilo, Hawaii
Visit and Learn at the Pacific Tsunami Museum in Hilo. The museum, dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives tragically in tsunamis, is found on Hilo Bay. When you visit the museum, you will be able to see a number of interesting exhibits that explain tsunamis and educate the public on their danger.
One of the newest exhibits at the Pacific Tsunami Museum is the Memorial and Benefactor Wall. The wall is covered with wood framed tiles to honor those who lost their lives, as well as the museum's benefactors.
Another interesting exhibit is "The Science of Tsunamis." The exhibit includes photos, graphics, and more that describe how plate tectonics work and how they cause tsunamis. You will also be able to learn about seismographs and tsunami warning systems. As these warning systems become more sophisticated and reliable, many hope they will serve to save more lives.
Visitors will also be able to see information and photos about the tsunamis that have devastated the Hawaiian Islands in the past. You can see photos from a variety of events on Hawaii.
An exhibit that is scheduled to open in the coming months, the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami Exhibit, promises to be very interesting. The exhibit shall include photos from Indonesia and Thailand, as well as Sri Lanka, India, and the Maldives. You can also see an example of earthquakes that generate tsunamis. In addition, you can learn the stories of some of those who survived the disaster.
Keep an eye out for other great exhibits as well, including a tsunami warning simulator, learn about the origins of Hawaii, and learn about some amazing rescues that took place during tsunamis.
Those who visit the museum and want to find out more can do research in the Archives. You will be able to find photos, videos, as well as see oral and written stories by survivors of the tsunamis.
The Pacific Tsunami Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9AM to 4PM. Admission for adults is $7, seniors $6, and students 6 – 17 are $2. Those under six are free. The museum is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
